Staff vs Student Debate
As our debating season for the Seniors was coming to a close, we were treated to a friendly staff vs student debate during our Week 3 Senior School assembly, where Hibha K, Tina M and James D battled it out against Mr Kearney, Mr Chanter and Mr McDermott on the topic of ‘Australian schools should move to a four-day week.’ The arguments that both teams put forward were well-considered, informative and incredibly entertaining.
The adjudicators were impressed by both teams, eventually deciding that the staff won the debate by a very close margin. An honourable mention was awarded to Tina M, and best speaker was Mr McDermott. Well done to all.
Our student numbers in Debating are at an all-time high, thanks largely to the amazing support of our Debating and Public Speaking coordinator, Ms Weiler, and it is exciting that we have introduced a House Debating competition for the first time this year. Good luck to all debaters.
Science Meets Art
Check this out! What an incredible display we now have near the entrance to the Science Building — a mural painted by Melbourne-based artist Alex from the company ‘Urban Art.’
Mr Palomares, Head of Visual Arts writes:
This mural is a vibrant celebration of academic excellence, inspired by the wonders of science and space. At its heart is a detailed portrait of Albert Einstein, one of the most influential thinkers in academic history.
Surrounding Einstein are star constellations and mathematical equations, emphasizing the interconnectedness of knowledge and discovery. A prominent DNA helix structure stands out in the centre, representing the foundation of life and scientific inquiry.
The mural seamlessly integrates planets and cosmic elements, creating an engaging and educational visual experience. This design perfectly aligns with the academic focus, inspiring students and fostering a deep appreciation for science and learning.
Book Week Dress Ups
Book Week Dress Up Day is Friday 23 August.
This is an opportunity for all students, in both the Junior and Senior schools, to dress up as their favourite book character and talk to others about the book that inspired their costume. It is also a great way to end Book Week.
Whilst it can be fun to go all out, costumes don’t need to be elaborate. It can be items found around the house that have been modified with a little creativity and maybe a hot glue gun. The focus is on the conversations that can be had around reading.
