Girl Power in Engineering and IT
In 2024, Jesmine (Year 9), was selected to participate in the Girl Power in Engineering and IT program at the University of Melbourne. This prestigious program is for female high school students, contributing towards gender parity in engineering and IT disciplines. As part of the program, Jesmine had the opportunity to attend a camp in July.
She shares her experience below:
I had the opportunity to participate in the Melbourne University Girl Power in Engineering and IT Camp from 7 July to 10 July. Throughout the exciting four days, we were given a tour of Melbourne University’s distinctive grounds, and buildings devoted to its field of study. We participated in a wide range of sessions over the duration of the camp, including a drone workshop, website development, prosthetic limb construction, and design thinking.
These workshops provided us with an overview of many distinct engineering pathways available at the University of Melbourne, such as software engineering, biomedical engineering, aerospace, industrial and mechatronic engineering. In addition to the workshops, we were invited to a panel evening, which featured women in different engineering and IT fields.
This allowed us to expand our knowledge, ask questions, and simply understand a day in the life of someone in such a male-dominated field. Prior to the camp, I had always been apprehensive about engineering, but after experiencing practical activities dedicated to those subjects, I left with a renewed interest in it and new-found information that will help me choose my career pathway. Ultimately, I understand the value of encouraging more women to pursue these careers, thus I urge all girls in Year 8 to apply for the program next year.
