From the Head of Junior School

Congratulations to our fifty Junior School students who represented CGS at the District Athletics Carnival recently. The students’ sportsmanship was of a very high standard and their enthusiasm was contagious. Mr Batey, Ms Roffey, Miss Sakeson, Mrs Willett and Miss Parnall were certainly proud of your efforts and I thank them for attending. All the very best to the following students who have qualified for Divisional Athletics:

Year 4

Allanah, Olivia, Zara, Pranshi, Erlyn

Year 5

Ruby, Xander, Enaksha, Eva

Year 6

Ella, Jake, Ariana, Kobi, Vrinda

I trust that all our CGS dads and grandfathers enjoyed their Father’s Day. Many thanks to our PFC for running our annual Father’s Day stall and our fabulous breakfast for all our dads, grandfathers and special friends. Thanks also to our wonderful staff and students in Foundation–Year 2 who enjoyed having their dads visit their classrooms. It was fabulous to see so many dads make the time to visit their children at school.

It was a joy to attend FH’s recent assembly. Given this was their first assembly, it was truly incredible to see them shine so brightly up on the big stage. Their rendition of Giraffes Can’t Dance was a credit to them and these students are certainly off to great places as we learnt from the infamous Dr Suess story that was told by the students. Huge congratulations to Ms Hodgkiss and her wonderful class.

AUSLAN was the focus of the amazing assembly that was hosted last week by 2H. The students used sign language throughout the assembly and taught us how to sign many different words. Their rendition of “I can see a rainbow” with not only fabulous singing, but also incredible signing, was a real highlight. The students performed a play based on the picture story book called Boy and they did a fabulous job of acting and signing. The assembly concluded with a beautiful song, “What A Wonderful World”. Bravo to Mrs Harrison and 2H.

Last Friday our Leaver fundraiser, The Great Book Swap, took place. It was a huge success and raised important funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to purchase carefully chosen books for children living in remote communities across the country. It also engaged our students in learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and culture. Sincere thanks to our Leaver Head of House, Mrs Kyne, and her Leaver students for all the work they put into ensuring their fundraiser was a great success.

Our Year 5 Ceres Excursion took place yesterday and our Year 4s journeyed to the Royal Melbourne Zoo today. More details will be available in our next newsletter.

On Saturday, 2 September our STEM teacher, Ms Trompeuse, Mrs Lovett and nine Casey Grammar students headed to the Robocup State Finals at Genazzano College. Our students competed as two teams against other students in the Standard League Soccer competition, building and programming a pair of autonomous soccer playing robots.

One of our two teams made it to the finals where they competed against secondary students from Melbourne High and John Monash Science School. Our students had so much fun! The crowd were behind CGS a hundred per cent.

Quite a few times, the Melbourne High robots were off the field being repaired, which allowed our robots to find and take the ball to goals, with the final score in the bronze play off being 7–5 in Melbourne High’s favour. What an incredible result for our Junior School students. To say Ms Trompeuse and Mrs Levett were proud of our students is a massive understatement!

Our students were confident in speaking to the secondary students who they competed against. They discussed their designs and even had some secondary teachers showing them prototypes. Our students were even commentating throughout the event.

Of course, the day would not have gone ahead with our wonderful Ms Trompeuse and I sincerely thank her for the hours of preparation that went into assisting our students to have their robots ready to go. To Ms Trompeuse and Mrs Levett, thanks for giving up your Saturday to attend this fabulous event. To our students, Agam, Aaron, Ethan, Jackson, Jayden, Dihein, Enrick and Javen, I congratulate you!

3–6 District Athletics

Recently, 46 students from years 3–6 competed in the District Athletics competition at Casey Fields. Casey Grammar students performed exceptionally well in the track and field events, against tough competition from the six other schools within our district. A number of students placed 1st or 2nd in their events and will be heading through to Divisional Athletics, a fantastic achievement:

Ella B – 2nd Shot Put

Ruby H –1st Discus

Olivia C – 2nd Long Jump

Vrinda S – 1st Long Jump and 1st 200 metres

Xander O – 2nd Triple Jump

Arianna J – 2nd Triple Jump

Jacob D – 1st Triple Jump and 2nd 100 metres

Zara M – 2nd 200 metres and 1st 800 metres

Kobi M – 2nd 800 metres

10 Girls Relay Team – 2nd

Zara M, Pranshi R, Erlyn S, Alannah B

    11 Girls Relay Team – 2nd

    Vrinda S, Enaksha R, Ella B, Eva S

I would also like to acknowledge a sensational act of sportsmanship displayed by two of our Year 6 students. Darcy V was 200 metres from the finish line in his 800 metre race, when he noticed a student from another school behind him was limping and in visible pain. Without hesitation, Darcy stopped his race, turned and ran back to the student, and helped to carry him the remaining 200 metres to the finish line. Not long after, Kobi M also took to the track to support the student on the other side, as the boys helped the student hobble across the finish line, to the standing ovation of the students, teachers and parents in the stands. Congratulations to these two students on this brilliant act of sportsmanship — you have done Casey Grammar proud.

      VJBL Grand Final

Outside of school, two of our Year 5 students, Jaxon D and Tyler M, played in their VJBL grand final on Friday night against the Knox Raiders. They ended up losing by 2 points in a very tight game, with a final score of 43- 41. Well done to the boys on this achievement.

Xander O from Year 5 also played in his VJBL grand final and won by a point. Congratulations!
