Australia’s best teachers in Herald Sun

Some of you may have seen Casey Grammar’s teachers in the Herald Sun on Sunday 23 April. The article was the conclusion of Newscorp’s campaign to recognise Australia’s Best Teachers. Casey Grammar featured because of the significant number of teachers nominated by grateful students and parents. I extend my thanks to those people who took the time to nominate the following staff; Ben Peake, Sarah Blythman, Stuart Collidge, Steve Kearney, Ryan Subban, Shane Bell, Jess Burns, Vanessa Hodgkiss, Maria Ramos-Chan, Diana Thompson, Louise Piva, Tegan West, Monique Riviere-Pendle, Sarah Nolan, Brittany Schulz, Angela O’Driscoll, Keir Selfridge, Carolyne Bennett and Fern Schreuder.

Casey Grammar’s teachers continue to excel.

Child safety

It is essential that the school is made aware of any student absences. If your child is not coming to school, it is important that you phone through their absence no later than 9:30 am. It is also very important that all students who arrive at school after 8:45 am or leave before 3:10 pm are signed in or out at Reception. There is an iPad set up at Reception for signing students in and out.

Reminder about family holidays during term time

Research shows that missing school has a detrimental effect on students’ academic growth as well as their social and emotional skill development. With 12 weeks of school holidays per year, it is an expectation that parents confine their family holidays to the school holiday periods. The school does not condone family holidays during term time.

Why going to school is important

Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day. Attending and participating in school will help your child develop:

  • important skills and knowledge to help them learn
  • social and emotional skills such as good communication, resilience and teamwork.

Children who attend school every day and complete year 12 have:

  • better health
  • better job opportunities
  • higher income across their lives.

There is no safe number of days for missing school. Each day a student misses puts them behind.

School formal

On Saturday night we had the pleasure of spending the evening with our Year 12 students at their School Formal. It was a wonderful evening with the students (and staff) looking glamorous in their formal outfits — a stark contrast to the day before where we spent the day in athletics gear. I would like to congratulate the Formal Committee for putting together this wonderful evening.

Reminder about new road laws covering e-scooters

Some of our senior students may ride e-scooters. To ensure everyone’s safety, there are new rules in place governing the use of e-scooters. If you or your child ride an e-scooter, please ensure you are following the new rules outlined in the link below.

Teacher Shortages

Term 2 has commenced with a few teachers absent due to COVID-19 and other illnesses. Over the coming term, we may experience periods of significant teacher absences. There may be occasions where we do not have enough teachers to adequately cover all classes. If this should occur, classes or year levels will be asked to stay at home and complete asynchronous learning activities. This is a last resort, however, with a chronic shortage of Casual Relief Teachers (CRTs) at the moment, it is a very real possibility. The school will provide as much notice as possible to the parents of the students who are asked to work at home.
