The VCE exams are in full swing, and we appreciate the efforts of the Senior School to maintain quiet in and around the VCE Building during this time.
Similarly, the exam period for students in Years 7 to 11 is fast approaching. The chance to sit formal examinations throughout secondary school is valuable, not only as a form of summative assessment, but also as an opportunity to revise content, prepare students for the reality of the VCE, receive feedback from teachers, and reflect upon examination techniques across a range of subjects.
The exam schedule has been sent to families via Seqta message, with a brief outline of dates below:
- Students in Years 7 to 10 will sit exams Monday 14 to Wednesday 16 November in English, Maths, Science and Humanities (History or Geography from Semester 2), as well as completing PAT testing.
- Additionally, students in Year 10 completing an accelerated subject will attend all timetabled classes from Thursday 17 November, but will complete their VCE Unit 2 exam as scheduled between Monday 21 and Thursday 24 November.
- Students in Year 11 will sit exams Friday 18 to Friday 25 November. No scheduled classes will take place during this time. Year 11 students are only required at school for their scheduled exams
History Week
This year, throughout the month of October, we celebrated History Month across Victoria.
History has moulded our society and our lives in almost every aspect, and it’s important that we understand how and why the world is shaped as it is today.
As part of these celebrations, the Humanities Department arranged a series of activities that were carefully designed to allow students to experience and explore different periods of the past. These included discovering the secrets of Ancient Egypt by translating hieroglyphics, building model medieval castles, and replicating renaissance artwork.
During our Week 4 Assembly, Year 11 students Noku, Gabby and Caitlin spoke about interesting references to History through music, outlining the lyrics of Billy Joel’s ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’. If you listen carefully, you will hear 118 separate events or names of historical figures, all from the late 1940’s up until 1989, the year the song was released.

SunSmart
We could be excused for naively thinking that in the past month, with the unusually cold weather and wet conditions, being SunSmart was not a priority. However, UV levels are generally at 8, and have already peaked at 10, which is very high.
Ongoing exposure to such levels can be dangerous to our health, resulting in sunburn, damage to our skin and eyes, premature aging, and skin cancer.
To reduce our risk from harmful UV radiation:
- Minimise uncovered skin
- Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen
- Wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses
- Avoid direct sun in the middle of the day
- Don’t forget to have regular check-ups with your GP or a dermatologist for potential skin cancer areas.
We ask for the support of parents to ensure that students in Senior School have a broad-brimmed school hat in their locker throughout Terms 1 and 4.
