Taking a Detour

When speaking with students, a key message I reinforce is that career pathways are not always linear. There are so many ways for students to achieve their career goals and there is great learning in taking a detour—sometimes we will not know what we will like, or dislike, until we try it.

To highlight these detours, I have included an infographic below (and available for download here) which demonstrates the different career and course pathways to becoming an Environmental Scientist.

These infographics should be used as a guide only. If you or your child have any specific questions about career and course pathway options, I would encourage you to make some time to meet with me.

Student Profile:

Rhys Braddock, Year 11, Booth

Rhys Braddock is in Year 11 at Casey Grammar School and as part of his VCE program, Rhys has enrolled in a TAFE (VET) program. This has given him a hands-on opportunity to develop his skills and support his transition from Casey Grammar School. I asked Rhys to share details of his VET experience.

What course are you studying?

I am currently studying a Certificate II in Electrotechnology. This is a 2-year course and, at the end, I will have a full pre-apprenticeship.

Where are you studying your course?

I am studying at Chisholm (Berwick). I attend TAFE from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm on Wednesday afternoon.

What is your favourite part of the course?

The practical work is my favourite part of the course because we can mess up. We learn how tools work and how convenient some tools are compared to others—some tools might be safer but less convenient.

What skills have you developed?

I have developed a wide range of skills with this course, like CPR. I have a better understanding on the theoretical side of my course, of how tools can be used for more than one thing and of different tricks you can use to save time or make something feel safer.

Where do you hope this VET course takes you?

I hope I will continue to enjoy this course in 2022. I want to work as an electrician and earn around 100k a year when qualified. Because I am younger, I also like that I can go down multiple paths with this course. If I get bored, I can try something else. I am just really hoping it allows me to keep myself working and having fun until I go into retirement!

Thanks for sharing, Rhys.
