Enhancing your Employability with Transferable Skills
In addition to the technical skills that you require for particular jobs, such as a carpenter using tools and understanding house plans, employers are also looking for general skills that are transferable across any role that you undertake.
Transferable skills are those that you develop and use throughout your life in work and non-work situations. They are often referred to as ‘employability’ or ‘enterprise’ skills.
These skills can be defined in different ways, but generally, they can be broken down into these nine categories:
- Communication
- Critical thinking
- Project management
- Financial literacy
- Technology
- Global enthusiasm/citizenship
- Confidence and agency
- Creativity and innovation
- Enthusiasm for ongoing learning
With the holidays fast approaching, it is a good opportunity for students to reflect on these employability/enterprise skills and to identify opportunities for personal/professional development.
How Can Students Develop Employability Skills?
Skills can be developed through study and work/life experience, for example:
- Part-time/casual employment
- Volunteer work
- School
- Interests and hobbies
- Life experiences (i.e. travelling, moving from another country)
- Work experience
If your child is interested in enhancing their employability (i.e. work experience during the break), please encourage them to make time to meet me to discuss opportunities.
